Goodbye UIR

WELL, its the end of the UIR module.
This last post will mark the ending of UIR. Basically from this UIR journey, I will say all the things that we learn are in depth versions. And we also make sure we really understand how to use and why. We also evaluate and know what is good and bad about certain websites.

After this 7 weeks of UIR, although blogging is not something new to me but i think i still learn new things on the way. Like creating RSS feed was never something I did before or interested in finding out. I think this blog will be another issue etched in my memories. Actually i think this module is rather stress-free and it doesn't restrict you to any limitations.

All in all, cheers to UIR =D

Talkingcock.com

During class for practical today, we were told to visit the website, talkingcock.com and evaluate it. They actually have a lot of humourous events and talks about recent issues happening. In fact, almost everything happening in Singapore, they can comment and make fun of it. They are really very "HAPPENING"! They even have a video up on youtube, which shows a "theme song for Singapore". The common language used there has definitely got to be Singlish.

This is their talkingcock main page.

Photobucket
The recent Mas Selamat issue has also been taken into consideration as a laughing stock.

IF I were to be a Singapore's Prime Minister,
I will feel rather unhappy about it, but cannot really do anything about it as the website is not registered under ".sg". I might not be able to fully understand and put myself in their own shoes as i might not have gone through what they have. And thinking is that the only way they can express themselves? And also think of ways to resolve this issues.

IF I were to be a Singaporean,
I will think that the way they project themselves is funny and cranky. And I will be able to understand and get into their situation immediately and easily. I might even invite my friends to visit and laugh at it together. I think its a medium to let people vent their unhappiness and yay "Freedom of speech".

IF I were to be a Foreigner working / studying in Singapore,
I think the website will actually give me an bad impression of Singapore, like why since you are a Singaporean and yet you are making jokes out of your own people. I might actually just "judge a book by its cover". What I meant is take the image of one for all the rest.

I think the website is sustainable to a certain extent. But actually maybe people who view it, shouldnt take it too seriously. Just laugh it off and throw it behind your mind.

My Dream Holiday

My Dream Holiday.
the internet resources that im referring to is
Welcome to Taiwan and About Taiwan
These two websites magically showcase Taiwan. The wonderful photos depics how beautiful the country is. Although i went there twice before, im still yearning for a third time.

The website clearing introduce you what and where is Taiwan, about their history, people, nature, culture, climate and religion. I believe getting to know and be aware of the place that you will be going from this website truely helps you a lot when you really reach there.
After browsing through the website i am packed with knowledges that i used to not know before. If I'm a first time visitor to Taiwan, I think the website is really a great helping hand.
It vividly shows where are the places of interest, how to get around(transportation), shopping, food, festivals, dinning, accomodation so on and so forth. They also post their latest news and events happening now at Taiwan.
The website is also provided in different languages, how convenient thoughtful can it be. No translators required!
The few languages are such as

They even have this section that is "Before You Go", what a important criteria.
They have about your arrival and departure, currency, getting to Taiwan, emergency etc. How helpful can it get.

I chose Taiwan to be my dream holiday destination because it is indeed very attractive. No communication barriers and i went before, therefore its easier to move around. The places of interest, shopping attractions and food are really amazing! It will really be shop till you drop!

While doing Practical 6 a & b, i really learn a whole truckload of stuffs that i dont used to know. Like how to go about evaluating a good website and what are its criteria. And in future, i will also know better how to sieve out useful information.

Magical pictures of Taiwan, here you go...

Internet Search Facilities (Practical 4 & 5)

In Practical 4 & 5, we were told to work on internet search facilities.
Based on my research topic, I need to choose relevant keywords to search for.
The keywords that I chose are: 'Impact', 'Computer', 'Crimes', 'Businesses'.
and I listed variations to my keywords:
'Impact' - Effects
'Computer' -
'Crimes' - Offenses
'Businesses' - Commerce, Industries
Then i came out with the search phrases that included the keywords and variations as identified....

(Impact OR Effects) AND (computer) AND (crime OR offenses) AND ((businesses) OR (commerce) OR (industries))

My search process was recorded in this table below:

I think the search engine and meta engine is more useful as it seems to be providing me with websites that are more related to my search.
I will rank the 3 accordingly like this
  1. Search Engine
    • Very useful, huge size of hits as compared to the other two, results are related to search
  2. Meta Search Engine
    • Useful, results are related to search
  3. Subject Directory
    • Results are not very near to what i want.
The best thing that I learned from this practical is about the Booleans. I really think that enhanced my search a lot!

Replies at SAOA Forum

yay.. the replies to my post at the SAOA forum.

let me paste out what the two good ones say:
  1. Picture yourself running online business.

Lets say if you're the CEO of eBAY

Then one time out of the blue, one hacker managed to break into the database. All confidential files like credit card, transaction record amd client's identity are lost and wiped out.

How detrimental would that be to the business? Lost of customer's confidence, lost of credibility? You name it.

Another way of thought, think about paypal. Just imagine if one people managed to manipulate a customer's database, e.g. balance manipulation =O

One example(fictional I guess) of the impact can be seen in Die Hard 4 movie =O

Remember that the criminal wanted to crash the stock market and cripple the economy? Just picture it like, suddenly you got a bunch of money floating around which you don't know who it belongs to.
  2. Impact:

    Lost of credibility
    Lost of Money
    Lost of Customers
Lost of sponsors or business partners
i think both of the replies given could vividly aid me in my writing. really thanks a lot for their help.

The 3 search facilities

In week 3, we were told to do research for the 3 search facilities. They are the:
  • Search engine
  • Meta search engine
  • Subject directory
Now from the results of my researches, i get to really know a lot more on these search facilities than before, and even how to enhance my output. It indeed benefited me a lot.

This is how search engine goes:

Search engine -

A search engine is a tool that enables users to locate information on the World Wide Web. It is a program that searches documents for specified keywords and returns a list of the documents where the keywords were found. Information sought may consist of web pages, images and other types of files.

Basically this is how you use the search engine:

  1. The searcher types a query into a search engine.
  2. Search engine software quickly sorts through literally millions of pages in its database to find matches to this query.
  3. The search engine's results are ranked in order of relevancy.

One fine example of a search engine is: www.google.com

Typically, a search engine works by sending out a spider to fetch as many documents as possible. Another program, called an indexer, then reads these documents and creates an index based on the words contained in each document. Each search engine uses a proprietary algorithm to create its indices such that, ideally, only meaningful results are returned for each query.

This is the screenshot of what i got when i hit

" (Impact OR Effects) AND (computer) AND (crime OR offenses) AND ((businesses) OR (commerce) OR (industries)) " into the search column in google.com

Next to go,

Meta search engine-

Meta search engines are search engine tools that pass queries on to many other search engines and/or directories and then summarize all the results in one handy interface.

One useful example is www.metacrawler.com/

This is the screenshot of what i got when i hit

" (Impact OR Effects) AND (computer) AND (crime OR offenses) AND ((businesses) OR (commerce) OR (industries)) " into the search column in metacrawler.com

Subject directory-

Basically how a search directory works is to
organize Web sites by subject, and is usually maintained by humans instead of software. The searcher looks at sites organized in a series of categories and menus. Web directories are usually much smaller than search engines' databases, since the sites are looked at by human eyes instead of by spiders.
  1. The searcher types a query into the Web directory, or searches the Web directory's indexed categories.
  2. The Web directory matches the searcher's query with relevant data from its index.
One example is http://dir.yahoo.com/

This is the screen shot of what i got when i hit

" (Impact OR Effects) AND (computer) AND (crime OR offenses) AND ((businesses) OR (commerce) OR (industries)) "

The most useful thing I learned is using the OR and ADD. They really produce more useful results when I use them!

    E-learning on Internet and Advocacy

    Hellos.

this is what i just did for Tut 1 and Tut 2 s' activity 1 in the discussion forum. Due to the e-learnings, all these have to be done at home.

Basically the two main topics are about how internet has enriched my academic life and the need for "Advocacy" websites.

Actually internet has really played a very huge and important role in my life now. Be it for entertainment or academic wise. When doing projects, i will always turn to Internet as my first choice, unless i am not able to find any reliable resources, then i would turn to library.
I think facts from books are always too stale and not wide and enriching enough as compared to Internet. Internet saves me from heavy hassles and is only a click away from solutions.

The other topic that I came across was on advocacy websites. The meaning that I've got when hit Advocacy on yahoo.com was "Advocacy is the act of arguing on behalf of a particular issue, idea, person or animal." Its actually the first time i see this word, and after researching on the Internet, i understand quite a lot from it. People from different parts of the world, who has either agreements or disagreements, will come together to a certain website to debate and finally come to a conclusion. I think it is a need for these websites' existence. It enlightens one and gives and widens one's point of view from different angles. It also serves as an influence to one another to come to an agreement.

Thats all folks for the first entry on e-learning. (:
